Curriculum Intent Statements

Our Curriculum Statement of Intent

Our aim is to provide our children with an exciting and engaging curriculum that prepares them academically, physically and mentally for learning and life today and for their future in modern Britain.

North Road Community Primary School is a small, semi-rural school with a constantly evolving curriculum.  It has been designed taking into account the knowledge, skills and understanding as set out in the National Curriculum and focuses on developing individual and collaborative learning experiences, a positive growth mind-set and responds to the needs of our learners and their interests.    Our Curriculum raises awareness of the local issues and the environment.  It is outward looking to both the national and global picture.  In this way, we are teaching children to engage in learning about themselves and have an understanding about the wider world in which they belong.

The Curriculum at North Road Community Primary School is a curriculum of the head (what and how we learn, who we are, how we live and where we fit into the wider world), heart (self-identity and well-being, celebration of differences, relationship skills, listening skills, empathy and teamwork) and hands (a creative curriculum which is meaningful and encourages curiosity and imagination).  We believe that children need to have the right attitude, skills and knowledge to be an effective learner.

Our curriculum:

  • has our school values, vision and ethos at its very core.
  • recognises and build on children’s prior learning
  • provides exciting first hand learning experiences
  • allows the children to develop interpersonal and social skills
  • develops creative and questioning learner
  • provides pupils with the opportunities to increase their self-esteem, motivation and aspirations.

Every child at North Road Community Primary School is recognised as a special and unique individual. We celebrate and welcome differences and diversity.  We offer a highly inclusive environment where all learners enjoy their learning experiences. The ability to learn and achieve their very best is underpinned by the teaching of basic skills, knowledge, concepts and values with a vision to prepare pupils for life beyond North Road Primary school. We strive to provide enrichment opportunities, as a school and within the Domino Alliance Hub Schools, to engage and inspire learning. We believe that all learning should be relevant to our pupils, fun and exciting and should inspire questions, provoke conversations and develop enquiring minds.  There should be no limits to curiosity and a thirst and desire for new experiences and knowledge.  We use our North Road Values (Respect, Positivity, Perseverance, Ambition, Pride and Responsibility) to promote positive attitudes towards learning, pride in personal achievements and a desire to go ‘over and above’ in all that they do.  These reflect the values and skills needed to promote responsibility for learning and future success as the pupils move forward with their lives and learning.

At North Road Community Primary School we promote physical health and wellbeing though a variety of initiatives and embedded practices including Walk to School, Children’s Mile, Pupil Play Leaders, Wake up, Shake up, Active Playtimes, Sensory Garden, Outdoor Reading Area and Buddy Stop.  We offer a range of clubs both after school and during lunch times and children can benefit from support from a trained ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) and Sand Box Therapist.

Community involvement is an integral part of our curriculum.  We welcome family members, visitors and the local community to support the learning of new skills.  We enjoy sharing our pupil’s achievements and learning through events such as assemblies, poetry recitals, learning celebrations and community events.  We also actively support community events through the involvement of our clubs such as choir, dance and cheerleading.  We display our artwork each term in different local community locations, promoting the skills and celebrating the creativity of our pupils.

Children leave North Road Community Primary School with a sense of pride in belonging to the local community where they have the self-confidence and life skills to make well informed decisions, be reflective, make relationships and become lifelong learners.
